St. Spirit – Something Terrible… is coming [MP3]

You know that feeling of excitement you get when you discover a new band and they instantly make it to the top of your “Priority Pile” of blog posts to publish? No? I do.

I immediately recognised that inkling whilst listening to Mary-Anne Hobbs’ XFM show last night and knew I was onto something. It occured to me within the first two minutes of listening to a track by a South London band, known to a handful by the name of St. Spirit. Admittedly, perhaps it was the Conor Oberst-type vocals that drew me into them (on a sidenote, I’m a sucker for anything Bright Eyes!), but ‘Build A Life’ was a song that made me stop what I was doing, open a new tab in the browser and do a little bit of research. That speaks for something.

St. Spirit are a freshly-formed 5-piece, who like to mix up light, quiet sounds and contrast them with a heavy beat and a dose of equally heavy guitar. I’d say that their sound bears the resemblance of Biffy Clyro and, personally, I would place a tiny Gaslight Anthem stamp on the more energetic of their tracks too. The slower tracks, namely ‘Tooth And Nail’ have a touch of Radiohead, which is a personal winner for me. PLUS the aforementioned beautiful, trembling Oberst vocals. So far, the band only have 6 songs posted on their website – two of which are free downloadables, hallelujah! – yet already I can smell that delicious brew of potential. Catch their upcoming EP, ‘Something Terrible’ on the 3rd September, or during one of the gigs they have lined up. Londoners and Bestival goers – rejoice!
