‘Cough Cough’ – Everything Everything
Hearing ‘Cough Cough‘ on the radio for the first time was like downing a quadruple shot espresso with a double helping of sugar. A little, massive burst of energy wrapped in a neat, 4-minute package that “hits you like a cop car”.
“Cough Cough is about the power of money and the desire to get away from it… It’s about having no money, and wanting more money, and wanting nothing to do with money at all.” – Jonathan Higgs, Singer and guitarist.
This is Everything Everything‘s way of shamelessly stealing all our attention and focusing it on their upcoming second album, ‘Arc‘, to be released early next year. They are one of those rare bands where two of its members actually have some sort of music degree, which in no way means that they are superior over all other artists, though it does mean that they know how to produce good music. I have personally never paid much attention to these guys – I can honestly say I’m not entirely sure why! – but ‘Cough Cough‘ is definitely, definitely up there with my top tracks of this year. Why? Have a listen yourself.
This song was actually released in late August – I have no idea why this sparkling little jewel was kept hidden from me all this time! ‘Arc’ is the follow-up album to their 2010 debut, ‘Man Alive’, where their quirky, electronic style of awkward but pleasing time signatures and occasionally heavy guitars was established. These guys have been around for just a few years, but they sure have a promising sound and I’m looking forward to hearing more of their stuff in time to come!
